anti-cellulite-creamsMaybe you’ve heard about Revitol cellulite solution, Revitashape, Murad, Nivea, Fatgirlslim, Clarins Total Body lift, Bliss or Cellulean.

But did you know that many of the cellulite creams actually use natural ingredients?  That way you don’t have to worry about harming your body and using harsh chemicals on it.

Many of the best cellulite creams have natural ingredients.  In fact, the majority of over the counter topical treatments contain one or more of the following:

  • Retinol.  Retinol is a form of Vitamin A. The body then converts it to a compound known as Retin-A.  Retin-A and Vitamin A work to increase the elasticity of the skin as well as having properties to penetrate deep into the subcutaneous layers of the skin.  In addition, Retinol has beneficial anti-oxidant properties.
  • Caffeine.  Caffeine is a highly used ingredient in many cellulite treatments. Although caffeine has not been independently and clinically proven to reduce cellulite, its supporters will not be detracted by the results of any clinical studies. Caffeine anti cellulite creams are supposed to help work as natural diuretics as well as helping repair scarred cells.  Other sites tout that caffeine improves circulation and firms the skin.
  • Cangzhu.  The Cangzhu root comes from the Actractyloides lancea plant, which is normally found high up in the mountains of China.  The root has long been used to eliminate stored fats within the cells. In addition, there are many medical studies related to the Cangzhu root and decreased weight in obese individuals, although there is yet no direct consensus of how this root works.
  • Algae.  Algae products are most often used as a body scrub.  It is intended to increase the regeneration of skin cells, thereby keeping the skin supple and smooth. In addition, algae is said to have detoxification properties, which allows the skin to look firmer and toner.
  • Bayberry extract.  Bayberry extract, also known as Myrica cerifera, has long been used as an astringent on the skin.  Astringents can have fat burning properties when applied directly to the skin and can also increase circulation of red blood cells to the dermis of the skin.

Thigh Creams (Cellulite Creams)

February 24, 2000

Various products have been promoted in the skin care market as thigh and stomach slimmers. Some advertising claims also promise the reduction of “cellulite”, waffly looking or orange-peel type skin caused by fatty deposits.

Aminophylline, an approved prescription drug used in the treatment of asthma, is an ingredient used in many of these thigh cream products that marketers claim will dissolve the fat and smooth the skin. Since some individuals suffer from allergic reactions to ethylenediamine, a component of aminophylline, the FDA is concerned about the use of this ingredient in cosmetics.

Consumers need to be aware of this potential for developing an allergic reaction and carefully read product labels and follow directions. Persons who suffer from asthma may wish to avoid these products so that they don’t develop a sensitization (become allergic) to aminophylline.

Drugs, unlike cosmetics, alter the structure or function of the body and are subject to an intensive review and approval process by FDA before their release to the public. Thigh creams may more appropriately be classified as drugs under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act since removal or reduction of cellulite affects the “structure or function” of the body.
